POPE-GERMANY Jul-12-2006 (270 words) xxxi

Pope to visit Bavarian cities where he taught, studied, served

By Carol Glatz
Catholic News Service

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- When Pope Benedict XVI visits Germany this September, he will make stops in his hometown of Marktl am Inn, a nearby town that houses a Marian shrine, and cities where he studied for the priesthood, taught theology and served as archbishop.

On July 12 the Vatican released a general itinerary of the pope's Sept. 9-14 trip to Germany's Bavaria region, his fourth foreign trip as pope.

On Sept. 9 Pope Benedict will fly from Rome to Munich, where he will stay until Sept. 11. He served as archbishop of Munich and Freising, 1977-1981, before he was called to Rome by Pope John Paul II to be prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

On Sept. 11, he will travel from Munich to Altotting. As a boy, Pope Benedict often went with his parents to Altotting to pray at the shrine of the Black Madonna. As an adult, he returned to Altotting frequently, sometimes for private, low-key visits.

Later that same day, the pope will head to Marktl am Inn, where he was born. From there, he will travel to Regensburg, where he will stay for four days. Pope Benedict taught theology at Regensburg University, his parents are buried in the city, and his brother, Msgr. Georg Ratzinger, still lives there.

On Sept. 14 the pope will go from Regensburg to Freising, where he went to the seminary, finished his undergraduate studies and was ordained a priest.

Later that day, he will head back to Munich to fly back to Rome.
