Pope to spend 26 hours at family meeting in Spain in July

By Catholic News Service
-Text-

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Pope Benedict XVI will spend 26 hours in Spain July 8-9 to preside over the conclusion of the Fifth World Meeting of Families, the Vatican announced May 13.

The Pontifical Council for the Family is organizing the meeting, which will run July 1-9 in Valencia.

The Vatican said Pope Benedict will arrive in Valencia at 11:30 a.m. July 8 and depart almost immediately after the meeting's concluding Mass July 9.

The gathering will focus on "transmitting the faith in the family" and will feature catechesis and theological discussions in separate sessions for children, young people and adults.

The pope is expected to attend the July 8 evening celebration of song, dance and testimony from families chosen to represent different parts of the world.

During the July 9 Mass, couples celebrating their 50th wedding anniversaries will renew their vows.

Pope John Paul II called the first World Meeting of Families at the Vatican in 1994, the U.N.-declared International Year of the Family.
