In Germany, pope to meet with youths, Muslims, visit synagogue

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- In addition to several meetings with young Catholics for World Youth Day, Pope Benedict XVI's Aug. 18-21 trip to Germany also will feature a cruise down the Rhine River, a visit to a synagogue and meetings with Muslim and ecumenical leaders.

More than 800,000 young people from around the globe are expected in Cologne for the World Youth Day celebration; prayers, meetings and a lunch with a few of them form the centerpiece of the papal itinerary.

Seminarians participating in the World Youth Day gathering, the German bishops and organizers of the youth festival also will have their own meetings with the pope.

But Pope Benedict's first foreign trip and his first return to his German homeland following his April 19 election also features meetings with the German president and with other civic and political leaders.

Here is the schedule for the pope's trip as released July 20 by the Vatican. Times listed are local; Eastern Daylight Time is in parentheses.

Thursday, Aug. 18 (Rome, Cologne)

-- 10 a.m. (4 a.m.), Departure from Rome's Ciampino airport.

-- Noon (6 a.m.), Arrival at the Cologne-Bonn international airport. Welcoming ceremony. Speech by pope.

-- 12:45 p.m. (6:45 a.m.), Transfer by car from the airport to the residence of the archbishop of Cologne.

-- 1:15 p.m. (7:15 a.m.), Arrival at the archbishop's residence.

-- 4:30 p.m. (10:30 a.m.), Transfer by car to the Rodenkirchenbrucke pier.

-- 4:45 p.m. (10:45 a.m.), Embark on the Rhine Energie boat and take a brief cruise down the river.

-- 5 p.m. (11 a.m.), Arrival at the Poller Rheinwiesen bank for the World Youth Day welcoming ceremony. Speech by pope.

-- 6 p.m. (noon), Arrival at the Hohenzollernbrucke pier.

-- 6:15 p.m. (12:15 p.m.), Visit to the Cologne cathedral. Greeting by pope from the square outside.

-- 7 p.m. (1 p.m.), Transfer by popemobile to the archbishop's residence.

-- 7:20 p.m. (1:20 p.m.), Arrival at the archbishop's residence.

Friday, Aug. 19 (Cologne, Bonn, Cologne)

-- (No time given), Morning Mass in private at the archbishop's residence.

-- 10 a.m. (4 a.m.), Transfer by car to Villa Hammerschmidt in Bonn.

-- 10:30 a.m. (4:30 a.m.), Courtesy visit with German President Horst Koehler.

-- 11:30 a.m. (5:30 a.m.), Transfer by car to the Cologne synagogue.

-- Noon (6 a.m.), Visit to the Cologne synagogue. Speech by pope.

-- 1 p.m. (7 a.m.), Transfer by car to the archbishop's residence.

-- 1:15 p.m. (7:15 a.m.), Arrival at the archbishop's residence. Lunch with selected participants from World Youth Day.

-- 4:30 p.m. (10:30 a.m.), Transfer by car to the Church of St. Pantaleon in Cologne.

-- 5 p.m. (11 a.m.), Meeting with seminarians in the church. Speech by pope.

-- 6 p.m. (noon), Transfer by car to the archbishop's residence.

Saturday, Aug. 20 (Cologne)

-- 6 p.m. (noon), Audience with representatives of Muslim communities at the archbishop's residence. Speech by pope.

-- 12:45 p.m. (6:45 a.m.), Return to the sacristy at Marienfeld.

-- 1 p.m. (7 a.m.), Transfer by car to the archbishop's residence.

-- 1:30 p.m. (7:30 a.m.), Arrival at the archbishop's residence.

-- 4:50 p.m. (10:50 a.m.), Walk to the Cologne seminary.

-- 5 p.m. (11 a.m.), Meeting with the German bishops at the seminary. Speech by pope.

-- 6 p.m. (noon), Farewell meeting with the World Youth Day organizing committee in the courtyard of the archbishop's residence.

-- 6:15 p.m. (12:15 p.m.), Transfer by car to the Cologne-Bonn international airport.

-- 6:45 p.m. (12:45 p.m.), Farewell ceremony at the airport. Speech by pope.
