Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist

By John Mulderig
Catholic News Service

NEW YORK (CNS) -- "Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist" (Columbia/Mandate) is a clever but morally indulgent romantic comedy that celebrates New York's after-hours clubs and independent music scene.

High school senior Nick (Michael Cera), the straight guitarist in an otherwise gay underground band with an unprintable name, is on the rebound after being dumped by his manipulative girlfriend, Tris (Alexis Dziena), when he meets fan Norah (Kat Dennings) after a performance. Over the course of one long busy night, they search for the secret location of their favorite group's next concert and try to retrieve Norah's alcoholic best friend, Caroline (Ari Graynor), who's missing.

After a less than promising start, they also fall for each other, though Nick is still haunted by his nearly obsessive feelings for Tris.

Director Peter Sollett's screen version of Rachel Cohn and David Levithan's novel features much understated humor skillfully handled by its leads. But the film takes a permissive view of underage drinking and of various types of sexual expression.

The film contains some sexual content including a brief nongraphic premarital encounter, sexual and scatological humor, brief irreverent humor, one use of the F-word, much crude language, and a few uses of profanity. The USCCB Office for Film & Broadcasting classification is L -- limited adult audience, films whose problematic content many adults would find troubling. The Motion Picture Association of America rating is PG-13 -- parents strongly cautioned. Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13.
