Primeval
By David DiCerto
Catholic News Service
NEW YORK (CNS) -- In the bloody action thriller "Primeval" (Hollywood Pictures), an American television news crew (Dominic Purcell, Brooke Langton and Orlando Jones) is dispatched to a civil-war ravaged African nation to report on a giant crocodile terrorizing the locals and to bring the beast back alive with the help of a seasoned hunter (Jurgen Prochnow) and an Australian reptile expert (Gideon Emery).
Allegedly inspired by true events, director Michael Katleman's mostly suspense-free "Jaws" rip-off is undone by schlocky effects and a script that tries to wedge social-conscience commentary into a B-movie plot.
The film contains much gory violence, grisly images, recurring rough and crude language and some sexual humor. The USCCB Office for Film & Broadcasting classification is L -- limited adult audience, films whose problematic content many adults would find troubling. The Motion Picture Association of America rating is R -- restricted. Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian.
