The Grudge 2

By David DiCerto
Catholic News Service

NEW YORK (CNS) -- Amber Tamblyn, TV's "Joan of Arcadia," is having visions again -- but of the demonic variety -- in "The Grudge 2" (Columbia), the sequel to the 2004 supernatural thriller.

Tamblyn plays Aubrey, the sister of the previous film's heroine, Karen (Sarah Michelle Gellar in cameo). Aubrey travels to Japan to be with her traumatized and now hospitalized big sister. She, too, becomes tormented by the vengeful raven-haired wraith whose malice has swelled beyond the haunted Tokyo abode of the first movie.

The spirit -- a woman murdered by her husband who now takes out her rage on the living -- also infects Allison (Arielle Kebbel), an American schoolgirl studying in Japan, who carries the evil "grudge" back home to Chicago where it spreads to her neighbors (including Jennifer Beals).

Emphasizing creepiness over coherence, director Takashi Shimizu (who also directed both the American and earlier Japanese originals) provides some chills, but the spooky effects are wasted on a nonsensical script, made all the more confusing by its nonlinear plot.

Those who didn't see the first film -- and even some who did -- won't have a ghost of a chance of figuring out what's going on.

The film contains some scary and disturbing images, horror violence, sexual situations and innuendo, as well as some scattered mildly crude expressions. The USCCB Office for Film & Broadcasting classification is A-III -- adults. The Motion Picture Association of America rating is PG-13 -- parents strongly cautioned. Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13.
