Just Friends

By David DiCerto
Catholic News Service

NEW YORK (CNS) -- "Just Friends" is a leaden romantic comedy about a former overweight "loser" (Ryan Reynolds) who turns himself into a suave and successful L.A. ladies' man. While waylaid in his New Jersey hometown, he pursues the affections of his high-school best friend and crush (Amy Smart), who held him at platonic arm's length when they were teenagers.

Despite ending on an admirably sentimental note, director Roger Kumble's film is forced and witless, its humor alternating between unfunny and mean-spirited.

The film contains much cruel slapstick violence, some lewd sexual situations and humor, an erotic image, a crass sight gag, a brief same-sex kiss, an instance of rough language and some sexually crude remarks.

The USCCB Office for Film & Broadcasting classification is L -- limited adult audience, films whose problematic content many adults would find troubling. The Motion Picture Association of America rating is PG-13 -- parents are strongly cautioned. Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13.
