Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo
By David DiCerto
Catholic News Service
NEW YORK (CNS) -- If nothing else, the creators of "Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo" (Columbia) were at least honest when they decided on the film's tagline which unabashedly announces that their movie sinks to a "new low."
Anyone who saw the dreadfully unfunny 1999 comedy "Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo" may find that claim hard to fathom. Believe me, they're not lying.
In the brainless and disastrously distasteful sequel, Rob Schneider once again doltishly plays the titular fish-tank-cleaner-turned-male prostitute, who this time finds himself in Amsterdam, Netherlands, where he must solve the murders of Europe's top gigolos to clear the name of his friend and former pimp (Eddie Griffin) implicated in the crimes.
Directed by Mike Bigelow, the much raunchier follow-up wallows in juvenile sexual and scatological sight gags that succeed in lowering the already gutter-level bar set by the original.
It seems that even rock bottom sometimes has a trap door.
The film contains pervasive sexual and gross-out humor, some partial nudity and comic violence, comical treatment of physical and mental disabilities, drug content and much rough and crude language and profanity. The USCCB Office for Film & Broadcasting classification is O -- morally offensive. The Motion Picture Association of America rating is R -- restricted.
