The Devil's Rejects

By David DiCerto
Catholic News Service

NEW YORK (CNS) -- The family that slays together stays together seems to be the message of "The Devil's Rejects" (Lions Gate), writer-director Rob Zombie's perverse sequel to his 2003 cult horror film "House of 1000 Corpses."

The follow-up reunites the homicidal Firefly clan, a backwater brood headed by killer clown Captain Spaulding (Sid Haig), the deranged father of sociopath siblings Otis (Bill Moseley) and Baby (Sheri Moon Zombie).

Using the term in its most liberal sense, the "plot" follows the bloody trail left by the threesome as they flee the vigilante justice of a relentless sheriff (William Forsythe) determined to avenge his brother's murder.

What is most disturbing about the film is not just its morbid humor or sickening gore, but its macabre attempt to position the maniacal Fireflys as close-knit, loving and loyal kin. Oh, they bicker and kill lots of people, but beneath their satanic cruelty and Pop's John Wayne Gacy makeup, we're to believe they're just like any other family.

Laced with visual nods to Arthur Penn, Sam Peckinpah and Tobe Hooper, the almost pornographically violent movie is as pointless as it is utterly revolting: depravity as entertainment.

Reject these Manson family values.

The film contains pervasive dehumanizing violence, including grisly killings, mutilations and torture; sadistic sexual situations including a violation with a gun; a soft-core sexual encounter with partial nudity; full-frontal shower nudity; drug content; themes of revenge; and much rough and crude language and profanity. The USCCB Office for Film & Broadcasting classification is O -- morally offensive. The Motion Picture Association of America rating is R -- restricted.
